Greenshell New Zealand Ltd is pioneering the way for the sophisticated New Zealand aquaculture industry. The company sustainably farms around 10,000 tonnes of mussels annually - over 10% of the total national harvest.

Greenshell New Zealand has always recognised the importance of traceability, quality and regular supply to our operations. We have direct control of everything from seeding and harvesting to packing and shipping.

There is both art and science to aquaculture. Regular monitoring of water quality, nutrient levels and health and safety testing is a necessity under New Zealand legislation. Mussel farming also needs a deep understanding of seasonal variances, weather and water conditions to get the best from nature and supply mussels year-round. Our Greenshell™ Mussels are harvested when they are at absolute plump perfection.

Opened in 2010, our newest production site’s 28 Automated Mussel Opening machines have a total peak capacity of 1.6 million mussels opened per day. This site has a staff of 240, making it one of the local communities’ largest employers. Other sites are dedicated to alternative product lines, with the potential to process over 30 000 tonnes of mussels annually - over one billion medium to large Greenshell™ Mussels.

The Greenshell™ Mussel is one of New Zealand’s unique treasures. It is one of the great seafoods, high in omega 3 with an international reputation for taste and quality.

Greenshell™ Mussels in either whole or halfshell have a stunning emerald green plate presence. They are an efficient option for any food service, as well as a gourmet option for the discerning chef. Sustainably farmed in New Zealand and subject to stringent requirements, Greenshell™ Mussels are tested to standards set by the US FDA, EU and NZ Food safety authority. This level of testing and our sustainable aquaculture practices make Greenshell™ Mussel one of the top two ‘eco friendly seafoods’ in the world.

Greenshell New Zealand Limited processes and supplies Greenshell™ Mussels in a variety of formats. With specialised plants and processing facilities, we can supply to requirements in halfshell, wholeshell or mussel meat. We can also supply live chilled mussels. Our flagship Ikana brand brings the best of Greenshell™ Mussels to a retail audience. These mussels are supplied in high presence, shelf ready, innovative packaging for microwave steaming.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT

Traceability

Greenshell New Zealand’s traceability systems can readily identify when the product was harvested, from what farm, where it was processed and when it was processed, even down to events that occurred in the water during the growing cycle.

Processing Safety

Greenshell™ Mussels are processed to the highest food hygiene standards. Its mussel processing operations are regularly audited by the USFDA, the European Union, New Zealand government agencies and other foreign country food safety regulators. Greenshell New Zealand processing operations all operate under the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) programme and its plants also meet all requirements of the USFDA National Shellfish Sanitation Programme (NSSP).

Compliance

Processing plants are regularly audited by the USFDA, the European Union, New Zealand government agencies and other foreign country food safety regulators.
